Please join us at CSIS for an expert panel discussion examining the
applications of blockchain technology in developing economies. We will
explore challenges and opportunities for blockchain technology to
deliver development impact.
Blockchain technology-- a free,
secure, distributed online ledger-- has the potential to be one of the
most important development innovations of the 21st Century. While the
full scope of its application is still being determined, developing
countries are already using blockchain technology to help citizens send
and receive remittances, improve land title registration, and extend
credit

March is supposed to be the month that British Prime Minister Theresa
May triggers Article 50, beginning the official withdrawal process of
the UK from the EU. Brussels says the UK will have to reach a financial
settlement first before any substantive negotiations on a future
relationship or trade deals can begin. Officials expect that sum to be
around 60 billion euros - payment, they say, for commitments the UK has
already made.
Theresa May has insisted multiple times that the UK
will be looking for a "hard" Brexit and opting out of the single market.
But is that what the British people voted for?
And where does that leave EU citizens in the UK and vice versa?
Once the UK triggers Article 50, two years of talks with the EU will begin - but at the end of that, what will happen?
We ask our panel of MEPs.
A programme presented by Eve Irvine
Produced by Isabelle Romero and Anais Guérard

With Putin to the East, Trump to the West and Brexit on the way, the
leaders of Germany, Italy and Spain came together at the Palace of
Versailles at a mini-summit hosted by France's president. Do the
continent's four biggest powers choose the option of putting European
integration into overdrive with much closer ties on defense, trade and a
common view on borders? When the dust settles, what will the EU look
like?

But travel restrictions aren't just affecting those countries. Nigerian
authorities are advising citizens to stay away from the United States.
In recent weeks, several Nigerians have been denied entry to America. A
special advisor to the Nigerian president says no reasons have been
provided for denying Nigerian citizens entry into the U.S. The travel
advisory came ahead of Trump's new executive order. His first travel ban
was blocked by the court. But Trump insists it WILL be implemented. The
restrictions apply to seven Muslim-majority countries, three of them in
Africa; Libya, Sudan, and Somalia.

Startup megacampus Station F will offer 120 perks, starting with Airbnb | TechCr... (techcrunch.com)Airbnb co-founder and CTO Nathan Blecharczyk was in Paris today to announce a neat little perk for future residents of Station F.
Based in Paris, the huge Station F building is going to have 3,000 desks for tech companies of all kinds. It wants to become the biggest startup campus in the world. And Airbnb is going to offer some free credit. This is just the first perk announcement, as there should be another 119 other perks for everyone at Station F. Airbnb is going to offer 3,000 travel vouchers worth $50 each.
In addition to that, anybody who wants to become a host will also get $100 Airbnb credit. Finally, five startups participating in Station F’s Founders program will receive $2,000 in free credit.“We’re just hoping to give back a little bit to the entrepreneurship community,” Blecharczyk said.
Later in the discussion, he also commented about Station F and the tech ecosystem in France. “What I think is unique about here is the scale — thousands of entrepreneurs all in the same room.
I think it could be the start of something really exciting, or the second chapter of something really exciting.”While this isn’t going to affect Airbnb’s bottom line, it shows the company’s willingness to look beyond Silicon Valley. Blecharczyk confirmed that Paris is Airbnb’s largest international city when it comes to listings and stays.... continue reading: https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/08/startup-megacampus-station-f-will-offer-120-perks-starting-with-ai...-

He claims that norms of democracy – such as a free press and the rule of law – have already been undermined by the new president. And, he says, the idea of democracy is falling out of favour with young people across the globe.-

Ten years ago, in November 2006, Al Jazeera English was launched. To mark that anniversary, we've created REWIND, which updates some of the channel's most memorable and award-winning documentaries of the past decade. We find out what happened to some of the characters in those films and ask how the stories have developed in the years since our cameras left.
Albinism is a non-contagious, genetically inherited disorder, affecting about one in 20,000 men and women around the world. Sufferers are afflicted by a congenital absence of melanin, a pigmentation defect in the hair, skin and eyes that causes vulnerability to sun exposure and bright light. Many have very poor vision as a consequence and in tropical countries especially they can be vulnerable to skin cancers if unprotected from the sun.
What albinism is absolutely not is an indication that the afflicted person is in any way invested with magical powers. But in parts of sub-Saharan Africa especially, people with albinism have traditionally faced discrimination and prejudice - innocent victims of a still widespread belief that the condition is in some way associated with the supernatural. In Tanzania, the situation spiralled out of control with people with the condition increasingly subjected to murder and mutilation because of a completely spurious myth that their body parts are effective in witchcraft rituals.
In this remarkable episode of Africa Investigates, Tanzanian journalist Richard Mgamba, community representative Isaack Timothy and Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas set out to discover what lies behind these attacks and to uncover and confront some of those behind the trade in body parts for witchcraft rituals.
REWIND returns to Tanzania to find out what happened to Adam, a young boy featured in the original film who had been mutilated for witchcraft.-

Steve Bannon's worldview is driven by two key beliefs: that Islam itself is a fundamental threat to the US, and that immigrants, legal and illegal, somehow make America less american. Bannon's views are outside the Republican mainstream, but they're already shaping policy in Donald Trump's White House.
